![]() You may end up spending hundreds to end up with a sound lacking what you had before!Įxample of my under seat D class amp, capable of powering 4 speakers, but in my car it powers the rear door components speakers. Word of warning, if your not ready to spend lots of money (BOSE type money) don't bother, even standard car audio has moved on so far forward then the old days. It still means a lot of work, but it is possible. The standard speakers can be replaced by good quality ones using adaptors available from most places. I've recently changed the head unit in my 2005 W203 (4 door) and want to fit a non-Bose original MB sub on the rear parcel shelf. They draw less current (run on smaller power cables - easier to hide under the carpet), they create less heat (will fit in tighter spaces - under passenger seat?) and will accept speaker level inputs. The latest Class D type car amps are so much smaller and better quality than the old A/B type we used to use. ![]() In the past, "speaker" level (or high level) input amplifiers was associated with sub standard output, but things have moved on. It is easily done, there are some very, very good amplifiers on the market that will accept speaker wire input (so you can keep the existing head unit)
